Moldovan President Igor Dodon and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier have discussed by phone the political situation in Moldova, the Moldovan presidential press service told Interfax on Tuesday.

According to the press service, the leaders also exchanged views on the new concept of Moldova’s foreign policy and the prospects of the political settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict.

During the conversation, Steinmeier “praised the efforts to restore Moldova’s good relations with Russia,” noting that “such good neighborly relations, open and transparent, would be beneficial to the Moldovan people,” the press service said.

“In the context of the prospects of the political settlement of the Transdniestrian issue, Steinmeier emphasized that it would be impossible to achieve this strategic goal without restoring good relations with the Russian Federation. Moreover, the Federal President of Germany pointed out that the way the current parliamentary majority was formed in Chisinau proves the existence of the international consensus with regards to Moldova between the great global powers. He also said he believes that this is also encouraging when it comes to the prospects of achieving a similar consensus on the resolution of the Transdniestrian issue as well,” the Moldovan president’s press service said.

The two presidents agreed to pay reciprocal official visits to Germany and Moldova respectively, it said.

Mid-July, Moldovan Prime Minister Maia Sandu paid an official visit to Germany at the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
